FORT MYERS — Hundreds of local kids woke up to bad news Friday morning. They found out the building they use for summer camp was getting shut down, because of a mold invasion. But thanks to some quick thinking, city officials have saved the summer.
The Shady Oakes Public Community Center has been around for years. During the summer, it's a second home to Maurissa Flournay and her friends. The building is the foundation of the Fort Myers Boys and Girls Club summer camp.
But Friday morning a sign greeted the children at the door. The building was shut down because inspectors found heavy amounts of mold on its walls.
"They found visible mold and they didn't want the children in there any more for safety reasons," said Jennifer Hobbic, spokesperson for the City of Fort Myers.
Kids were about to lose their summer camp and single parents, like Lashonda Kelly, were rushing to find alternatives.
"I'm not happy. He enjoys coming here and I work two jobs in the summer, so it's a place he can have fun in the summer," said Kelly.
City leaders began brainstorming to find alternatives.
"We were scrambling. We would have found someplace for them to go," said Hobbic.
But it turns out they don't have to.
"We are going to do a temporary fix this weekend," said Hobbic.
She says the building will be back open on Monday.
"They're going to remove the mold and protect the areas so they're safe for the children," said Hobbic.
Experts are confident no child's health will be in danger.
